BACKGROUND: The presence of subjective mechanical symptoms, such as clicking or popping, is common in patients presenting for shoulder pain and dysfunction, with unclear clinical significance. The primary objective of this study was to assess whether subjective mechanical symptoms in the affected shoulder were associated with full-thickness rotator cuff tearing in a consecutive, prospective cohort of patients undergoing shoulder magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for suspected rotator cuff pathology. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was performed of 100 consecutive patients with suspected rotator cuff tendinopathy and/or tearing who underwent shoulder MRI. The presence of subjective shoulder mechanical symptoms, including clicking or popping, was documented prior to MRI. Indications for MRI included weakness on isolated testing of rotator cuff muscle(s) or symptoms refractory to conservative treatment including at least a 6-week course of physical therapy. The primary outcome variable was the presence of full-thickness rotator cuff tearing; secondary outcome variables included any (full-thickness or partial-thickness) rotator cuff tearing and biceps long head subluxation. Radiographic parameters, including critical shoulder angle, Goutallier grade, tear retraction, and tear size were quantified. One patient was lost to follow-up, and 99 patients completed MRI imaging. RESULTS: In our cohort, 60% of patients reported subjective mechanical symptoms in the affected shoulder. Full-thickness rotator cuff tearing was identified in 42% of patients, any rotator cuff tearing in 69% of patients, and biceps long head subluxation in 14% of patients. Subjective mechanical symptoms were not associated with full-thickness rotator cuff tearing, any rotator cuff tearing, biceps long head subluxation, critical shoulder angle, Goutallier grade, tear size, or tear retraction. Older age was associated with full-thickness and any rotator cuff tearing. As a diagnostic test for full-thickness rotator cuff tearing, subjective shoulder mechanical symptoms has a sensitivity of 64%, a specificity of 44%, and Youden's index of 0.08, consistent with poor diagnostic accuracy. CONCLUSIONS: Subjective mechanical symptoms in the affected shoulder are a common complaint in patients with suspected rotator cuff pathology. Patients may be reassured that a sensation of clicking or popping alone does not necessarily entail structural shoulder derangement.

BACKGROUND: To compare the histopathological results of biceps tenodesis (BT) performed with normal, low, and high pressures for superior capsule reconstruction (SCR) in rabbits with massive rotator cuff tears. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty rabbits were divided into three groups. Rabbits 1-10 underwent SCR with BT at the same pressure (Group 1), value measured in the groove; 50% lower (Group 2); 50% higher (Group 3). After the 4-week follow-up, shoulder were en-bloc excised and histopathological evaluation was performed with modified Bonar's scale. Results were compared between the groups, statistically. RESULTS: Extracellular matrix were significantly lower in group 2 compared to the other groups (p < 0.05). Cellularity levels were significantly lower in group 2 compared to the other groups (p < 0.05). Group 2 had no difference between the sides (p > 0.05). Group 2 had lower vascularity levels compared to the other groups (p = 0.01). DICSUSSION: When the biceps tendon was in the bicipital groove and in a more mobile state with lower pressure exposure. BT performed with a tension that creates less pressure than the biceps in the groove is more successful in SCR.

PURPOSE: The hamstrings muscles are innervated by sciatic nerve branches. However, previous studies assessing which and how many branches innervate each muscle have yielded discrepant results. This study investigated the innervation patterns of hamstrings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-five cadaver limbs were investigated. The average age of subjects was 78.6 ± 17.2 years, with 48.6% male and 51.4% female, while 57.1% were right limbs and 42.9% left. The sciatic nerve, hamstrings and associated structures were dissected. The number of nerve branches for each muscle and the level where they penetrated the muscle were recorded. RESULTS: The sciatic nerve was connected by a fibrous band to the long head of the biceps femoris. This muscle was innervated by either one or two branches, which penetrated the muscle into its superior or middle third. The short head of the biceps femoris was innervated by a single nerve that usually penetrated its middle third, but sometimes inferiorly or, less commonly, superiorly. The semitendinosus was always innervated by two branches, the superior branch penetrating its upper third, the inferior mostly the middle third. The semimembranosus usually was innervated by a single nerve branch that penetrated the muscle at its middle or lower third. Four specimens revealed common nerves that innervated than one muscle. CONCLUSIONS: We have characterized hamstring innervation patterns, knowledge that is relevant to neurolysis, surgery of the thigh, and other procedures. Moreover, a mechanical connection between the sciatic nerve and biceps femoris long head was identified that could explain certain neuralgias.

The purpose of this review is to provide a comprehensive resource for shoulder proprioception assessment and its integration into clinical decision making as well as targeted rehabilitation protocols. Data for this review were acquired from peer-reviewed articles from computerized online databases, namely PubMed and Medline, published between 1906 and 2021. The development of digital/smart phone goniometers can improve shoulder joint range of motion (ROM) measurements and demonstrate comparable measurement accuracy to the universal standard goniometer. The inclinometer offers a portable and cost-effective method for measuring shoulder joint angles and arcs of motion in the vertical plane. Two types of dynamometers, the computerized isokinetic machine and the handheld hydraulic dynamometer, are reliable tools for objective shoulder rotator cuff strength assessment. Motion analysis systems are highly advanced modalities that create three-dimensional models of motion arcs using a series of cameras and reflective beads, offering unparalleled precision in shoulder proprioception measurement; however, they require time-consuming calibration and skilled operators. Advancements in wearable devices and compact mobile technology such as iPhone applications may make three-dimensional motion analysis more affordable and practical for outpatient settings in the future. The complex interplay between proprioception and shoulder dysfunction is not fully understood; however, shoulder proprioception can likely both contribute to and be caused by shoulder pathology. In patients with rotator cuff tears, glenohumeral osteoarthritis, and shoulder instability, clinicians can track proprioception to understand a patient's disease progression or response to treatment. Finally, rehabilitation programs targeting shoulder proprioception have shown promising initial results in restoring function and returning athletes to play.

For most shoulder surgeons, addressing massive rotator cuff tears that have retracted ends poses a significant challenge. This study introduces a technique, termed the "sandwich augmentation technique," which incorporates the long head of the biceps tendon (LHBT) into a single-row rotator cuff repair. The procedure, performed arthroscopically with the patient in the lateral decubitus position, involves attaching the LHBT and rotator cuff tissues together to the greater tuberosity. This effectively sandwiches them within the rotator cuff footprint. The goal of this technique is to enhance the thickness of the fully interposed cuff margin, thereby providing better support for the repair. The sandwich augmentation technique, which integrates the biceps into the rotator cuff repair, has demonstrated positive clinical outcomes and moderate anatomical results. It also prevents superior migration of the humeral head in cases of large or massive rotator cuff tears. Further research is required to assess the long-term effectiveness of this procedure.

Introduction: Pathologies of the shoulder, i.e. rotator cuff tears and labral injuries are very common. Most patients receive MRI examination prior to surgery. A correct assessment of pathologies is significant for a detailed patient education and planning of surgery. Materials and methods: Sixty-nine patients were identified, who underwent both, a standardised shoulder MRI and following arthroscopic shoulder surgery in our hospital. For this retrospective comparative study, the MRIs were pseudonymised and evaluated separately by an orthopaedic surgeon and a radiologist. A third rater evaluated images and reports of shoulder surgery, which served as positive control. Results of all raters were then compared. The aim was an analysis of agreement rates of diagnostic accuracy of preoperative MRI by a radiologist and an orthopaedic surgeon. Results: The overall agreement with positive control of detecting transmural cuff tears was high (84% and 89%) and lower for partial tears (70-80%). Subscapularis tears were assessed with moderate rates of agreement (60 - 70%) compared to intra-operative findings. Labral pathologies were detected mostly correctly. SLAP lesions and pulley lesions of the LHB were identified with only moderate agreement (66.4% and 57.2%) and had a high inter-rater disagreement. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that tears of the rotator cuff (supraspinatus, infraspinatus) and labral pathologies can be assessed in non-contrast pre-operative shoulder MRI images with a high accuracy. This allows a detailed planning of surgery and aftercare. Pathologies of the subscapularis tendon, SLAP lesions and biceps instabilities are more challenging to detect correctly. There were only small differences between a radiologic and orthopaedic interpretation of the images.

PURPOSE: Management of massive rotator cuff tears (MRCTs) remains debated, and various arthroscopic and open techniques have been described for their management. Nevertheless, the optimal strategy remains unclear. The present study evaluated the clinical results in patients managed arthroscopically for MRCTs augmented with the long head biceps tendon (LHBT) at a minimum 1-year follow-up, considering different type of tears, demographic data and number of torn tendons. METHODS: Patients treated in a secondary referral centre from January 2021 to April 2022 were enroled prospectively. Inclusion criteria were pain, inability to fully elevate the affected shoulder, irreparable tears and active and motivated patients. All patients were managed within 2 months from diagnosis in a single centre by the same surgeons. Preoperative shoulder radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were collected, and clinical assessment was also performed using the Numerical analogue scale (NAS), Constant score (CS) American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Shoulder Score (ASES). Tissue retraction and tendon fatty infiltration were evaluated using Patte and Fuchs scale, respectively. Clinical assessment was performed using the same scales at 3-6 months and 1-year follow-up. RESULTS: A total of 55 patients (31 female and 24 male) with a mean age of 60 ± 7.1 years were enroled for a mean follow-up of 18.2 ± 4.3 months. The mean preoperative NAS was 7.8 ± 0.6, CS was 20.5 ± 7.6 and ASES was 22.6 ± 9.2, increasing, respectively, to 0.3 ± 0.6, 91.5 ± 6.9 and 94.2 ± 6.7. No adverse side effects (infection, rejection, allergy) were reported during the study period. All patients were evaluated after surgery at 3 and 6 months and 1 year with statistically significant improvement for each score at the first and last follow-up (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The use of LHBT augmentation in patients with MRCTs in appropriately selected patients is safe and effective and can lead to pain relief and acceptable clinical outcomes. Furthermore, its use carries low donor site morbidity and is cost effective. Comparative studies, including randomised controlled trials, with other proposed techniques are needed to confirm these findings. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level IV.

It is a surgical procedure involving the reattachment or relocation of the biceps tendon to alleviate pain and enhance function in conditions, like tendinitis or tears. The rehabilitation program is specifically tailored to address the distinct challenges associated with biceps tenodesis recovery, focusing on gradual exercises aimed at improving strength, range of motion (ROM), and functional capacity. Through a comprehensive analysis, this case report seeks to offer insights into the potential advantages and obstacles of employing a specialized physiotherapy approach in the holistic care of individuals undergoing biceps tenodesis, contributing to the ongoing development of postoperative rehabilitation strategies.

The distal rupture of the biceps brachii muscle tendon (DBT) accounts for 3% of biceps ruptures. Diagnosis typically relies on high clinical suspicion and complementary imaging studies, with >90% of cases documented in males between the fourth and sixth decades of life. Reports of DBT ruptures in females are scarce, mostly involving partial and degenerative injuries. Here, we present an unprecedented case of a 28-year-old female professional mixed martial arts athlete with a total traumatic DBT rupture. The athlete underwent surgical repair using anchor reattachment technique. No complications were observed, and the athlete showed satisfactory outcomes, being cleared for physiotherapy after 2 weeks and returning to sports after a 3-month postoperative period.

Introduction Pre-operative diagnosis of subscapularis tears remains a difficult challenge. Ultrasound has been shown to be ineffective at directly detecting subscapularis tears. It has been widely accepted that medial subluxation of the long head of biceps tendon (LHBT) is associated with full-thickness subscapularis tears. The aims of this study are to assess whether LHBT subluxation on ultrasound scanning has any predictive value for subscapularis tears and to determine the relationship between LHBT subluxation and subscapularis tears at arthroscopy. Methods Pre-operative ultrasound and arthroscopic findings for patients undergoing arthroscopic rotator cuff repair at our institution between March 2011 and January 2016 were analysed. The accuracy of LHBT subluxation on ultrasound and at arthroscopy as a predictor of subscapularis tears at arthroscopy was calculated. The correlation between LHBT subluxation and subscapularis tears was determined. A standardised technique was used for ultrasound scans, and the grade of the sonographer was recorded. Results Three hundred fifty-nine rotator cuff repairs were performed. Twenty-four patients had a subluxed LHBT. Ultrasound was poorly sensitive (50%), and a subluxed LHBT on ultrasound only correlated very weakly with subscapularis tears at arthroscopy (R = 0.268, p<0.001). At arthroscopy, 92 patients had full-thickness subscapularis tears. Of these, only 16 patients (17%) had a subluxed/dislocated LHBT. Of the 24 patients with a subluxed LHBT, eight had no subscapularis tears. Thus, LHBT subluxation/dislocation only correlated weakly with full-thickness subscapularis tears (R=0.252, p<0.001). Conclusion Due to their close anatomical relationship, traditional teaching suggests subscapularis tears are associated with medial LHBT subluxation. Our data indicate that, contrary to popular belief, the two are only weakly correlated. In our series, the majority of patients with subscapularis tears (83%) had their LHBT in-groove. The authors therefore recommend high vigilance during arthroscopy for the diagnosis and repair of subscapularis tears, regardless of pre-operative ultrasound findings and the intra-operative position of the LHBT.

BACKGROUND: The biceps brachii (BB) is a fusiform muscle comprising of two muscular bellies located in the anterior compartment of the arm. Its primary function includes elbow flexion and forearm supination. PURPOSE: The study aimed to examine the morphometric parameters of the BB in adult cadaveric specimens. METHODS: This dissection-based study examined the anatomy of the BB in 40 arms taken from 20 Thiel embalmed European cadavers, including 13 males with an average age of 81 years and seven females with an average age of 84 years. The investigation included an observational inspection of the BB morphology and collected 19 parameters, comprising the lengths and widths of the short and long head tendons and muscle bellies. RESULTS: The observation analysis showed that the anatomy of the BB consisted mainly of two muscle bellies: a short head and a long head. An additional third humeral head, originating from the anteromedial aspect of the mid of the humerus and inserted into the common biceps tendon, was observed in four (10%) specimens. The average lengths of the short head and long head were 35.98 ± 3.44 cm and 38.90 ± 3.40 cm, respectively. There was no difference in the BB parameters according to the arm sides. However, the male specimens showed greater BB parameters than the female specimens. CONCLUSION: The short head had a greater muscle belly, while the long head had a longer origin and insertion tendons. The BB parameters were correlated positively with the humerus length.

BACKGROUND: Both inlay and onlay arthroscopic biceps tenodesis (ABT) are common procedures performed during rotator cuff repair. The inlay method involves creating a bone socket in the bicipital groove to secure the long head of the biceps tendon using an interference screw. The onlay method utilizes a suture anchor to secure the long head of the biceps tendon on the surface of the bicipital groove. Little is known on the long-term differences in patient-reported outcomes between these 2 techniques. The primary purpose of this study was to compare patient-reported outcomes of inlay vs. onlay ABT with a minimum follow-up of 2 years. Secondary aims were to evaluate the impact of rotator cuff tear size on outcomes and compare rates of complications between the 2 techniques. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed to identify patients who had an ABT during a full-thickness rotator cuff repair. Any symptom specific to the biceps were noted, including pain and cramping, Popeye deformity, or revision surgery. Complication rates were compared between groups. The visual analog scale pain score, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES), Single Assessment Numeric Evaluation, and Veteran's RAND-12 score (VR-12) scores were compared at 2 years. The impact of rotator cuff tear size was analyzed by categorizing into small/medium or large/massive based on operative reports and arthroscopic images. RESULTS: There were 165 patients identified (106 in the inlay group and 59 in the onlay group). No revision surgeries were performed secondary to the biceps tendon in either group. Eleven patients (10%) in the inlay group complained of biceps pain or cramping compared to 2 patients (3%) in the onlay group (P = .11). One Popeye deformity was noted in each group (P = .67). No significant differences were found between groups for visual analog scale (P = .41), ASES functional (P = .61), ASES index (P = .91), Single Assessment Numeric Evaluation (P = .09), VR-12 Physical Component Score (P = .77), or VR-12 Mental Component Score (P = .09). Rotator cuff tear size within the groups also did not demonstrate statistical significance. CONCLUSION: No clinical differences or complications were found at minimum 2-year follow-up between inlay and onlay ABT in patients undergoing rotator cuff repair when controlling for tear size. The clinical relevance suggests either technique is effective and can be based on surgeon preference.

Background: Biceps tenodesis is a common treatment for pathologies involving the long head of the biceps brachii. Given variations in surgical approach, focus has been placed on the location of the tenodesis to maintain appropriate length-tension relationship. The purpose of this study is to assess for variations in the tunnel placement in subpectoral biceps tenodesis procedures and correlation of tunnel position with patient-reported outcomes. Methods: This is a retrospective case series of outcomes as a function of tunnel location with open subpectoralis biceps tenodesis. The location of the biceps tenodesis tunnel was measured on postoperative Grashey radiographs. Correlation between the tenodesis tunnel and postoperative American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) score and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) was assessed. Results: 31 patients were included in the study with an average follow-up of 17 months. The overall tunnel position from the superior edge of the greater tuberosity ranged from 4.20 cm to 12.61 cm, with an average of 7.46 cm. Final ASES score and VAS were 84.5 and 1.2, respectively. There was only weak correlation between both ASES score and tunnel position (r = -0.12) and VAS and tunnel position (r = -0.23). Discussion: Subpectoralis biceps tenodesis continues to be a viable treatment option for biceps and superior labral pathology. There remains no consensus on tenodesis location, and this study found no significant difference between tunnel location and patient-reported outcomes. Therefore, it is likely that a range of tenodesis locations exists in which favorable clinical results are achieved, explaining the numerous recommendations on tunnel placement.

Purpose: Biceps tenodesis is an effective surgical procedure that can address pathologies of the long head of the biceps tendon. The purpose of this study was to evaluate clinical outcomes following two different biceps tenodesis techniques: Loop 'N' Tack biceps tenodesis and subpectoral biceps tenodesis. Hypothesis: Patients undergoing both the subpectoral biceps tenodesis and Loop 'N' Tack biceps tenodesis will have improvements in patient-reported outcomes. Methods: Hundred and sixty five consecutive patients who underwent biceps tenodesis were retrospectively identified and contacted by phone to collect visual analog scale pain scores, University of California, Los Angeles shoulder scores, Simple Shoulder Test scores, Single Assessment Numeric Evaluation scores, and American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons scores. Range of motion, elbow flexion strength, and incidence of bicipital groove pain and Popeye deformity were recorded. Results: One Hundred and forty five patients were included in the study (55 subpectoral, 90 Loop 'N' Tack). Patients in both groups reported high American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, Simple Shoulder Test, University of California, Los Angeles, Single Assessment Numeric Evaluation shoulder function scores, low visual analog scale pain scores, and had a minimal risk of complications when measured one year postoperatively. Conclusion: Loop 'N' Tack biceps tenodesis and subpectoral biceps tenodesis techniques are reliable and effective procedures that can reduce pain scores and restore shoulder function when patients require surgical intervention.

Background: Cardiac amyloidosis is a fatal disease of severe heart failure caused by the accumulation of amyloid in the myocardium. This disease is often advanced by the time cardiac symptoms appear; therefore, early detection and treatment are critical for a good prognosis. Recently, it has been suggested that cardiac amyloidosis is implicated in several orthopedic diseases, including carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), which is often reported to precede cardiac dysfunction. Shoulder disease has also been suggested to be associated with cardiac amyloidosis; however, there have been no reports investigating the rate of amyloid deposition in shoulder specimens and the simultaneous prevalence of cardiac amyloidosis. Herein, we investigated the prevalence of intraoperative specimen amyloid deposition and cardiac amyloidosis in shoulder disease and CTS to determine the usefulness of shoulder specimen screening as a predictor of cardiac amyloidosis development. Methods: A total of 41 patients undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery and 33 patients undergoing CTS surgery were enrolled in this study. The shoulder group included rotator cuff tears, contracture of the shoulder, synovitis, and calcific tendonitis. In the shoulder group, a small sample of synovium and the long head of the biceps brachii tendon were harvested, while the transverse carpal ligament was harvested from the CTS group. The intraoperative specimens were pathologically examined for amyloid deposition, and patients with amyloid deposition were examined for the presence of cardiac amyloidosis by cardiac evaluation. Results: In the shoulder group, three cases (7.3%) of transthyretin amyloid deposition were found, all of which involved rotator cuff tears. None of these three cases with amyloid deposition were associated with cardiac amyloidosis. When examining the specimens, the amyloid deposition rate in the long head of the biceps brachii tendon was higher than that in the synovium. In the CTS group, 12 cases (36.4%) of transthyretin amyloid deposition were observed. Of these cases, seven underwent cardiac evaluation and two were identified with cardiac amyloidosis. Conclusion: While the prevalence of amyloid deposition and cardiac amyloidosis in the CTS group was consistent with previous reports, the shoulder group showed a lower deposition rate and no concomitant cardiac amyloidosis. Therefore, it remains debatable whether investigating amyloid deposition in samples obtained from shoulder surgery is beneficial for the early detection of cardiac amyloidosis.

BACKGROUND: In the Emergency Department (ED), patients may present with various injuries that damage muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bony structures. Fractures, joint dislocations, strains, and sprains are prevalent among them. However, distal biceps tendon ruptures are uncommon. CASE REPORT: Here, we report a case of a young man presented to the ED with a complaint of left arm pain following a martial arts activity. The diagnosis of distal biceps tendon rupture was made using a point-of-care ultrasound (PoCUS), and an early referral to the orthopedic service was provided. CONCLUSION: This case highlights the utility of point-of-care ultrasound in assessing musculoskeletal injuries in the ED. Early incorporation of PoCUS into routine clinical practice can potentially improve the overall care of musculoskeletal injuries.

PURPOSE: The biceps brachii muscle (BBM) is a large and thick muscle on the ventral portion of the upper arm. The scientific literature reports the existence of extra heads. OBJECTIVE: The present work investigated the frequency of occurrence of BBM accessory head(s) in four different Anatomy Laboratories at universities in Northeast Brazil. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Once the upper limbs with an anatomical variation of the BBM heads were identified, the accessory head was evaluated for morphometric characterization (the length, width, and thickness). RESULTS: The sample consisted of 249 upper limbs and the outcomes were 26 members with BBM accessory heads (10.44% of the total sample). Among the 26 members studied was found a single accessory head in 22 (84.62%), two accessory heads in 3 (11.54%), and three accessory heads in 1 (3.85%). BBMs with one, two, and three accessory heads were found, with different origins. The average length, width, and thickness of these accessory heads were 169.39mm, 10.25mm, and 3.39mm, respectively. CONCLUSION: The frequency of BBM accessory heads in a population of northeastern Brazil in this cadaveric study was 10.44%.

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic rotator cuff repair with biceps re-routing (ABR) has emerged as a reliable option for treating large, posterosuperior rotator cuff tears. This study aims to compare functional and structural outcomes of early versus delayed motion rehabilitation protocols following ABR. METHODS: A total of 101 patients with semirigid, large, posterosuperior rotator cuff tears undergoing ABR were randomized into two groups: Group I (early motion) with 53 patients (34 females, 19 males) and Group II (delayed motion) with 48 patients (31 females, 17 males). In Group I, the mean age was 63.9 years (range, 46-79), and in Group II, it was 65.4 years (range, 43-78). The mean follow-up periods for Group I and Group II were 16.2 and 15.5 months, respectively. Preoperative and postoperative assessments were conducted at 3, 6, and 12 months, with structural integrity assessed with MRI at a minimum follow-up of 12 months. Statistical analyses were performed to compare outcomes between the two groups. RESULTS: Both groups demonstrated significant improvements in VAS score (Group I: 4.0 to 1.6, Group II: 3.7 to 1.4, p = 0.501), UCLA shoulder score (Group I: 21.5 to 31.4, Group II: 22.4 to 30.6, p = 0.331), and acromiohumeral interval (Group I: 8.2 mm to 9.1 mm, Group II: 8.6 mm to 9.5 mm, p = 0.412), with no statistically or clinically meaningful differences. Active range of movements (ROM) were not significantly different between groups, except for active forward flexion at 3 months (Group I: 140.1º, Group II: 119.2º, p = 0.006), that was not shown to be translated clinically into differences in function or healing between the groups in this study. Notably, retear rates were similar between groups (Group I: 22.6%, Group II: 20.8%, p = 0.826). CONCLUSION: This study's findings reveal no clinically discernible differences in active range of motion at one-year follow-up between patients who underwent ABR for semirigid, large, posterosuperior rotator cuff tears and were assigned to either early or delayed motion protocols. Notably, the early motion group demonstrated a plateau in maximum ROM improvement as early as three months post-surgery. Based on these results, implementing an early motion protocol is recommended as an effective approach in the postoperative rehabilitation following ABR.

Objectives: To assess the link between ultrasonographic measurements of the biceps brachii and total muscle mass measured by bio-impedancemetry in hospitalized older patients. Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted. The study included patients older than 65 years admitted in internal medicine, acute geriatrics, orthogeriatrics and rehabilitation departments. All measurements, ultrasonographic measurements and muscle mass and function by bio-impedancemetry and dynamometry, were taken within the first 48 hours of admission. Results: In total 19 patients were included, the mean age was 85.4 ± 3.9 years and 7 (36.8%) were females. Very strong direct correlations were obtained in the entire cohort in both biceps brachii cross-sectional area and muscle thickness with skeletal muscle mass displayed in kilograms. Conclusion: Biceps brachii looks like a very good muscle measuring tool: easy, comfortable, fast, good correlated with total body muscle mass. This muscle could effectively be used for the assessment of muscle mass in the diagnosis of sarcopenia since it reflects muscle mass precisely, however more studies are needed to provide reference values in all age cohorts.
